So many books, so little time

I have so many books to read right now that I can't even begin to keep up!

First of all,  I have five books that I have to read so that I can write my six page "philosophy of Christian education" paper. Sounds like fun, right? Yeah, I don't think so, either. So far I've read one and a half of the books. Each one has some good parts and some parts where you think, "What is this guy thinking?!". There is so much information that I am at a loss as to where to start the paper, too. I've got about four months to finish it, so we'll see how it turns out.

I'm also in the book club, of course. Our book for this month is Barbara Kingsolvers, The Poisonwood Bible. Wow. That was a long book. I really enjoyed it, so I couldn't put it down so that I could work on other, more important readings. I just had to finish it.
It is a fictional book about a family who moves to the Congo as missionaries. They endure some incredible ordeals, including the death of one of their children. It made me very grateful for all that we have here in Korea. A lot of little things are different, but the big things? The important things? Like heat, running water, even air conditioning in the summer? We've got those things, reliably. And I am thankful for them.

Another group of books I'm working on is the reading list for the sophomore World Literature class. It looks like that may be what I'm teaching next year, so I'm trying to get a jump on the reading now. The class is having a guest speaker from Afghanistan next week to coincide with their reading of Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner. I'm going to try to get over there to sit in (even though it will be my first week of full time and our middle school Spiritual Emphasis week...busy, busy!), so I wanted to be hearing the speaker in the same context that the kids are. I had to go out and buy my own copy, so that I could write and mark all over it! I'm excited about this reading list, but it will be more enjoyable to focus on these books once I'm done with the philosophy of ed. books.

The books on my own personal reading list are the ones that keep getting pushed down on the priority list. I received Pearl S. Buck's Living Reed for Christmas, a historical fiction novel about life in Korea. I'm really excited to read this, as well as many books on my Kindle, but I'm not sure when I'll get around to it...you reading anything good lately?

  1. Awesome idea, the joy of books is a great simple thing. There is some much imagination, wealth, insite and enjoyment in the written words.

    1. I feel like it's a rare moment when I can sit in quiet and read a book, so I treasure it as well. Somehow I've managed to be able to read more since moving to Seoul--I think it's the fact that the nanny takes care of all the housework! :)

  3. I have switched to the iPad, and I, like you, have so many books to read and so little time. This is a great shot. I really like photographs of books. genie

    1. My hubby likes to read his books on the iPad too...that bright screen just doesn't work for me, though. Thanks!
